Lago Titicaca

Posted on 4th November 2012

Thought I’d share with you guys a little trip away we had last week to Lago Titicaca.

Its is one of the most beautiful scenery’s I’ve ever seen! The lake is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia, so on one side sits Peru and on the other Bolivia. Surrounded by stunning mountains, as I walked around and gazed across the lake I found myself feeling so lucky to have this opportunity to take in such a delight that many people could only imagine experiencing.

The lake sits 3,811 m (12,500 ft) above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. At times it felt like I was in the clouds its so high. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America (Lake Maracaibo has a larger surface area, but it is often disregarded as it is directly connected to the sea). I was quite overwhelmed at how huge the lake was, unlike anything I’ve seen before.

We stayed on an Island called: Isla de Sol – Island of the Sun. We walked around this island and it was fascinating to see people actually living in such remote circumstances. No cars on the island just donkeys for transport. Its was really nice to live so relaxed and basic for a weekend, around such picturesque views!

If you ever visit Bolivia or Peru I would highly recommend a trip to Lago Titicaca definitely a once in a life time experience!
